Welcome to the Department of Christian Religious Studies at Kaduna State University.
Christian Religious Studies of Kaduna State University aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of the Christian Religion and other related disciplines for an all-round development of the individual and the society, by inculcating the spirit of love, tolerance, understanding and unity.
The vision of the Department of Christian Religious Studies is to become a world class department which provides excellent instruction and skills in all aspects of Christian Studies.
The historical background of Christian Religious Studies (CRS) as an academic discipline is closely intertwined with the history of Christianity itself.
Early Christian teachings and scriptures date back to the 1st century AD, with the New Testament documenting the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and the early Christian communities. Over the centuries, Christianity spread across the Roman Empire and beyond, evolving into various denominations and theological traditions.
In the context of education, the teaching of Christianity has been integral to the development of formal education systems in many parts of the world. In Europe, during the Middle Ages, monasteries and cathedral schools served as centers of learning where monks and clerics taught Christian doctrine, theology, and Latin.
With the establishment of universities in medieval Europe, the study of theology became a prominent academic discipline, forming the foundation for what would later become Christian Religious Studies. The Protestant Reformation in the 16th century and subsequent religious movements led to the proliferation of theological schools and seminaries, further solidifying the study of Christianity within academia.
In modern times, the teaching of Christian Religious Studies expanded beyond theological institutions to include secular universities and schools. CRS programs typically cover a wide range of topics, including biblical studies, church history, Christian ethics, theology, and comparative religion.
In many countries, including Nigeria, CRS is an important component of the educational curriculum, providing students with an understanding of the Christian faith and its significance in both historical and contemporary contexts. The discipline continues to evolve, incorporating interdisciplinary approaches and addressing contemporary issues within the field of religion and society.
